What the Queensland law actually requires
Rented and sold properties have had to comply since January 2022. From 1 January 2027 the same rules apply to every owner-occupied home in Queensland — including yours.

The things people ask us
Do I really have to do this by 2027?
Yes. From 1 January 2027, every owner-occupied private dwelling in Queensland must have interconnected photoelectric smoke alarms. The requirement has already applied to rented properties and to homes being sold since 1 January 2022 — 2027 is the date it reaches the rest of us.
What happens if I leave it until December 2026?
You'll be competing with everyone else who did the same. Every electrician in the state saw exactly this in the run-up to the 2022 deadline: lead times stretch out and choice of appointment times disappears. Doing it now costs the same and takes an afternoon.
Why photoelectric? Aren't all smoke alarms the same?
No. Older ionisation alarms respond well to fast flaming fires but poorly to smouldering ones — the type that most often kills people in their sleep. They're also the alarms most likely to go off when you cook or shower. Photoelectric alarms detect smouldering smoke far earlier and are dramatically less prone to nuisance alarms, which is exactly why Queensland now mandates them.
Will these ones go off every time I make toast?
They shouldn't. Nuisance alarms come down to two things: the quality of the sensor and where the alarm is mounted. We use alarms with good insect and steam resistance, and we keep them the required distance from kitchens, bathrooms, fans and vents. If one does become a nuisance, call us — we'll come and sort it.
Do I need one in the living room or garage?
The law requires alarms in bedrooms, in hallways connecting bedrooms to the rest of the home, and on every storey — so a living area often gets one where there's no hallway. Garages aren't required and generally aren't a good idea, because exhaust fumes and dust set them off. We'll walk the house and tell you what's needed.
How long does the install take?
Around one to two hours for a typical home. Someone over 18 needs to be there to let us in and to see the final test, but you don't need to hover — we'll stay out of your way.
What if an alarm fails in a few years?
Every alarm carries a full 10 year manufacturer warranty and our workmanship is guaranteed with it. Call us, and we'll replace it. We keep a record of exactly what was installed at your address, so you don't have to find the receipt.
Am I paying a deposit or the full amount?
Whatever's shown on the checkout page when you book — nothing hidden behind it. If you'd rather not pay online at all, use the booking request form and we'll take payment after the job is done.
